wow, isn't that a 92% reduction on last year?

In Fukushima (where the meltdown was), 1kg of rice was "above safe levels" - 620 Bq where the arbitrary "safe level" is 500. A banana anywhere in the world is 15 Bq.

So the level of radiation you are talking about per 1kg rice, is 8 bananas above "perfectly safe".

Now I know this is bullshit. The water being dumped on the reactor is filling up a sealed resevoir and the only way it is escaping is by being boiled off by the hot fuel rods. It is escaping from steam and certainly not flowing back to sea.

Something my sister has drawn my attention to recently;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molten_salt_reactor

Nuclear energy is already by far the safest source of energy in terms of deaths/accidents per GW etc but it could be so much safer. The currently popular reactor design was chosen for political reasons, not because it was ever the best / safest technology available.

No need to dump water in the sea, they just let it seep into the ground:
120 tons of radioactive water escape from underground facility
