Who do we have at what Unis around the country? members or interested non members. so far i know of 2 at UofA (me and 5o1) and 1 at UC (Qu4Z).

Basically because working through student and student unions is one of the best ways we can grow.

In Germany, the young pirates (JuPis) go up to 27 years old, which covers teen pirates and pirates on campus. I think we should emulate this.

This is something i want to bring up at the meeting on 15/5/10 and it would be nice to have this info by then :)

I don't think there's anything wrong with having a large number of people in both at the same time. I don't see the need to have such a clear distinction. Also, they will end up with a different culture and style, so it would be good to let 18 - 27s be active where they're more comfortable, and each organization would be much better informed on what the other one is doing.

If you separate it along eligibility to vote lines, you'll be splitting up groups of friends as they turn 18, and you'll have people staying on with teen pirates anyway, and avoiding joining ppnz.

as a comparison, 2/3 of the 450 german young pirates are also pirate party members.

But if Hausrabe tells us that JuPis isn't working well in Germany, i'll happily shut up about this.

University of Canterbury here. I'm fairly busy, but I'll see whether I can spare some time to try to promote JuPis

Make "Young Pirates" go up to under 30, gives me a few more spare years ;)

Plus more in line with the bigger political parties, where anything under 30 is quite young.

Fair enough, but I don't think we should have the same policy as other parties where members under 30 are "quite young". I think part of our selling point is that we're not conservative old fogeys :P (no disrespect, there are some very cool >30 politicians). As such, it might make sense to think carefully about the Young Pirates age range. By all means let it go up to 30, but make it so because of good, thought out reasons, not because that's what other parties with different circumstances do. Just my two cents :-)

The main reason i want to go for 27 or 30 is simply that, as more people are eligible, it is less likely to fold. While it would ideally be 100% organised by e.g. under 20yos, some of the time there won't be enough members willing to put the time in to replace organizers as they turn 20. Especially in years between elections, when activity normally dies off.

Hell, we have enough trouble finding anyone willing to run the main party. anything lower than 27 would be shooting ourselves in the foot.

I would be happy to be involved in Pirate Party activities at Victoria University, but being old and broken (34) I'm not of much use to a Junior Pirates organisation... but my daughters favourite t-shirt when she was 3 had a pirate skull on it... I'm sure she'll join when she reaches 18 ;)

I'll bring this thread to the top too, seeing as O-week is coming up now.

Auckland - we should be able to get something going

Christchurch - we have 3 people there, worth talking about getting something going. (james g, Qu4Z, ubergeek85)

Dunedin - we have 3 people there, and we should try to get something going (Emily, Sean, other guy who i have contact details for)

I am only around Victoria University for a few more months (my thesis is due in August), mainly the Vivian St. Campus downtown, but would love to see the party grow and am happy to help drive for members and advertise the party policy and ideals while I'm here. I do however have some questions...

Are there any rules, guidelines, or recommendations as to what is most effective? Are there any existing materials that can be worked with to create material like posters or fliers, and are there any rules around their distribution, like numbers, placement, cost, etcetera? Do the rules at http://www.elections.org.nz/rules/parties/partysub/e5-party-advertising-summary.html apply, even though the party is not yet registered?

Just trying to cover all bases.

Existing material is here: AGW, PPAU: 1 2 3 4 as well as application forms. These were all made 5 months ago, but we haven't managed to make any more lately, except this.

Anything asking people to join YPNZ is not an election advertisement, and the regulated period only starts in August anyway, so even if PPNZ was already a registered party, we would be fine.

As far as techniques, we can't say much yet, can't really say last orientation was that successful. I will say that you should NOT let people walk away and say "i'll come back later" (they forget) and try to get peoples emails even if they don't want to join. (basically anyone who gives you their email for YPNZ purposes is a YPNZ member)
