I am not a mathematician but there must be a way to use crowd sourcing and data mining to trawl through data in the public domain.

Algorithms such as that used in Benford's lawhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benford's_law could be used in real time to monitor and flag fraudulent activities in government and commerce.

Maths does not lie It is people who use it. However you are right to be suspicious that is why crowd sourcing is important. A few people can misuse statistics to claim what they want and fool a lot of people but the force of numbers win in the end. Remember it goes "You can fool some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time. But you can't fool all of the people all of the time."
