With the .nz Domain database building up there needs to be a plan put in place.
The First Idea is to limit .nz domains to New Zealanders or People Resgiterd with a "New Zealand Companies Number" (NZCN).
By putting this in placen we hope to limit the point of internatioal citizens purchsaing .nz domains and 1. Not using them 2. Have them redirect to a another site that is not related to new zealand dealings.
I will show an exaple with the domain chandler.co.nz , This Domain is regsited to Neil Chandler in the UK. He has not used the domain. This would be classed as "usless purchase" and would be released in to the domain pool for rerelaese to People in NZ.

This is my letter i wrote a while ago, I haven't been bothered to fix the mistakes.

Please let me know what you think.

I can't really see the rationale for limiting .nz domains to New Zealanders, could you explain that further?

With regard to "useless purchases", that is really a matter solely for the owner of the domain to decide. After all, who gets to decide what kind of use is good enough?

The point useless is the domain not being used, in other words squatting. chandler.co.nz is a example. Ever since that has been registered it has not been used.

The Idea is similar to what the aussie have, and to protect users from pishing sites. (yes there was one, buymore.co.nz).
This would make it harder for scams to set up shop.

Not everyone uses domains for public websites. You have no idea if the domain is being used to provide private web services, mail, ssh, a VPN, or any of the 65533 other things that aren't http or https!

Can't trace route, and when i had opendns set up name Sever fails.
So its not even set up at the host.

I've got a domain I've had offline for over a year while I setup the thing. It's an issue of how much I want to say about what, and why I'm not mentioning more is something else altogether.

Another example (I could probably find more) would be meta.net.nz ... the basename doesn't resolve to anything, the www is nothing more than a simple logo. metanet's web presence is basically non-existent. But behind the scenes it's a fairly large experimental virtual network that's been running for ten years or more and also hosts various chat servers, dynamic DNS entries, etc. There are a lot more people using meta.net.nz than are using pirateparty.net.nz

No thats not what im talking about.
The 2 websites i showed. ARE NOT set up at the web sever your meta.net.nz has a logo. the 2 sites i showed are nothing. not set up at the hosts.

If I wanted to hold on to a domain just for fun, is that really such a problematic thing that it should be prevented?

they would only take it off you when someone else wanted it, for a "better" purpose right?. I'd say just make them buy it off you. That way you know how much each of you want it.

Why restrict people with what they can do? Your reasons are not strong enough in my opinion.

Not that we have a huge problem with squatting in NZ anyway, our domain names are too expensive per year to keep hanging on for ages. That is an issue I would like to see addressed.... make them cheaper.
